TRAVEL ZHANGJIAJIE
GENERAL INFORMATION- Zhangjiajie is famous for its 3,000 vertical pillars, each hundreds of feet tall and covered in dense green foliage. These pillars were formed by erosion and draw in upwards of 30 million tourists every year.The city features a variety of different terrains including mountainous regions, upland areas, plains, and Karst rock areas. Near Zhangjiajie is Yuanjiajie and the top attraction is "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain". 4 must-sees in Zhangjiajie are the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianmen Mountain, Yellow Dragon Cave and Baofeng Lake. Among these, the mountains cover 76 percent of the total area. The world-famous natural heritage site 'Wulingyuan Scenic Area' is located on the base of these great mountains. Wulingyuan Scenic Area is comprised of several national parks, the most famous of which is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a 243 square mile park full of stunning karst pillars of sandstone, covered with sub-tropical rainforest. In 1982, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park became China's first national forest park. The park is often covered in fog, adding to the mystery but obscuring views. Wulingyuan Scenic Area consists of four parts- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve and the Yangjiajie Scenic Area.

- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Gate: The first gate off the road from Zhangjiajie City to Suoxiyu Town, it is the southwest gate at Gold Whip Stream.
- Wulingyuan Gate: Most hotels are at Wulingyuan District's main town — Suoxiyu. Enter here for the Bailong Elevator and Tianzi Mountain Cable Way.
- Tianzi Mountain Gate: Requiring a long trip round to the north of the park, it accesses the mountain top by road, saving the expense of a cable car. Little used. ZHANGJIAJIE SCENIC AREA ACCESS AND PRICES-There are three cableways inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, an elevator, and an electric cart (also called the mini train). The 248-yuan entry ticket doesn't include these.
- Yellow Stone Village Cableway: 65 yuan for a single trip, 118 yuan for a round trip, it saves 1½– 2 hours walking for a single trip .
- Tianzi Mountain Cableway: 67 yuan for a single trip, 104 yuan for a round trip, saving 2–3 hours walking one way
- Bailong Elevator: 72 yuan for a single trip, 112 yuan for a round trip, saving 1½–2 hours one way up to Yuanjiajie: always crowded — avoid if possible.
- Yangjiajie Cable Car: 79 yuan for a single trip, quiet, up to Yangjiajie.
- Ten-Li Gallery Mini Train: 38 yuan for a single trip, 52 yuan for a round trip, we recommend the 1–1½-hour walk at the foot of Tianzi Mountain instead
- QUEUES-
- Bailong Elevator is the worst place (waiting time: 1–2 hours, sometimes even 4 hours). Avoid lines by hiking 1–1½ hours, or arrive before 7am and descend before 4 pm.
- Tianzi Mountain Cable Car (waiting time: 1–1½ hours or longer) can be avoided by walking up about 9,000 steps (2–3 hours). Alternatively get to the cableway before 7 am for a shorter queue, and descending before 4 pm you may avoid a line altogether.
SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS AT ZHANGJIAJE AREA-
001-TIANMEN MOUNTAIN- Tianmen Mountains is located 10 kilometers south to Zhangjiajie City in Hunan Province of China. The elevation of Tianmen Mountain is 4,980 feet (the highest in Zhangjiajie); people be amazed that about 40 peaks inside the mountain area are over 3,200 feet. It is NOT in the National Park. Due to the high elevation of the mountain, the day time is longer than the night hours and the temperature on the mountains is about 10 degrees centigrade lower than the Zhangjiajie city, the sunrise on the mountain is 30 minutes earlier and the sunset is 45 minutes later than it is in the city areas. Thus it is known as an endless sky without darkness. The mountain is famous for its unique natural miracle - the Tianmen Cave. It is regarded as the Top 1 Heaven Mountain in the west part of Hunan province. The stunning views including 'Heaven's Door' and the 99 Bends, vertical cliffs, the thrilling cliff-hanging walkway and glass skywalk, and the world's longest cable car ride, make it unquestionably one of the best mountains to visit in China. Come, climb the 'Stairway to Heaven'.
001-i-The Tianmen Mountain Cableway - The most convenient and special way to get to the Tianmen Mountains is through the City Garden Cableway built in city centre of Zhangjiajie. It is the longest mountain cableway in the world, the hypotenuse length of the cableway is 24,459 feet (more than 4.5 miles) starting from the city centre of Zhangjiajie to the 'Hanging Garden' on the peak. It takes about 30 minutes for over 7 kilometres. The last part of the cable way is very steep, going up at 37 degrees over sheer cliffs to one of the mountain peaks. The cable car starts at 7:30 in summer and 8:00 in winter. The scenery viewed from the cable car is fantastic: lush mountain peaks, the 99 Bends (99 sharp curves on a road up to the mountain peak), and deep valleys. One cable car holding eight people. The cableway may close when there are thunderstorms, high winds, or heavy snowfalls.

001-ii-Heaven-Linking Avenue/ Tongtian Avenue (The 99 Bends) - Actually, it is the twisting mountain road from the foot of the mountains to the 'Heaven Ladders' of Tianmen Cave. The mountain road is only less than 11 kilometres but the elevation rises rapidly from 200 meters to 1300 meters. Ninety-nine turnings decorate the holy road and it was built with over a hundred millions of Chinese Yuan investment together with a 5 years hard working. The twisting road is like a white dragon lying on the mountains, this road is regarded as the most amazing mountain road in the world. Tourist buses take travellers from the midway cable car station along some of these 99 bends to Tianmen Cave. The bus does not stop on the way. It takes about 20 minutes to the cave. This road is used for mountain bike cycle races, definitely, it is interesting and exciting to ride bicycle at Tianmenshan, and bicycle lovers focus more on the beautiful sceneries along the road and the challenge to conquer such a mountain distance.
001-iii-Tianmen Cave (Means The Heaven's Gate In Chinese) -The cave is on the cliffs and is over 4,133 feet elevation, the height of the cave is 431.5 feet and the width is about 150 ft., the unusual grotto is grand and magnificent. The cave is like the door to heaven; it looks like the junction of common world and the place where god lives. The water-eroded hole between two peaks, like a huge doorway in the cliff face. It's the highest hole of its sort in the world. You may need to walk up 999 steps to reach the cave, it will be tried but lucky, because '9' is the biggest number in Chinese culture and 999 means an eternal/forever life. The highlight of Tianmen Cave is the mystic views of fog and cloud. Watching the changing of clouds and fogs, the feeling is like traveling in a place with profound questions asked by the god. The World Wingsuit League held the first and second World Wingsuit Championships at Tianmen Mountain, flying through Tianmen Cave.
001-iv-Bonsai Garden (Hanging Garden)-As an national forest park, on the peak of Tianmen Mountain locate big primeval forests, the main area being protected is named Bi ye yao tai scenic areas (in the east of the peak areas). The whole area looks like a natural bonsai and over 20 attractions can be seen there, it is the biggest one of the four scenic areas of Tianmen Mountain.
001-v- The Cliff-Hanging Walkway- The walkway was built along the edges of this mountain's summits, clinging to the vertical cliffs. The walkway is about 1.6 kilometres long, about 1,400 meters high. The Cliffside loop takes about 1½ hours. At the end of the walkway, there is a hanging bridge linking two peaks. Stand on the crystal clear walkway, you can see all the way down to the bottom of the cliff and Tongtian Avenue (Heaven-Linking Avenue), which is the road up the mountain featuring a staggering 99 turns.
001-vi- Coiled Dragon Cliff/ Glass Skywalk- In Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area 'Coiled Dragon Cliff Glass Walkway opened to the public on August 1st, 2016.It is 100 meters (328 feet) long, 1.6 meter (5 feet) wide and altitude over 1,400 meters (4,600 feet).
001-vii- The Walk Of Faith- The first glass skywalk on Tianmen Mountain called "the Walk of Faith" opened in November 2011. Since then it has been a must-see tourist attraction on the west side of the mountain. It is the part of the cliff-hanging walkway by Ghost-Valley Cave, only about 200m from the top of the cableway. It is 60 meters (197 feet) long, 1.6 meters (5 feet) wide.
001-viii- Open Chairlift- The open chairlift is at the end of the hanging bridge. Two persons share a chair. It goes up to the summit of the mountain, where there is a tower. At the top of the tower, travellers can get an eye’s-bird views of the surrounding mountains. The chairlift takes about 20 minutes over densely forested peaks.
002-ZHANGJIAJIE GRAND CANYON- The Grand Canyon of Zhangjiajie is located at Sanguansi Township of Cili County, next to Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is new discovery outside Zhangjiajie National Park, 10 km east to Wulingyuan world natural heritage site.
You can take the direct bus from Zhangjiajie Center Bus Station to the canyon with a duration of 1.5 hours. Touring in the Grand Canyon needs more than 2 hours walking. There is around 54 kilometres between the Grand Canyon and the downtown of Zhangjiajie City.

002-i--Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge- The world's longest and highest glass bridge, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge opened to the public on August 20, 2016. It offers a way to enjoy a panoramic view of the stunning Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge hangs over a valley. It provides a superb panorama of the entire Grand Canyon. Unlike the Glass Bridge on Tianmen Mountain of Zhangjiajie, which is inserted on the mountainside with a height of 1,430 meters (4,690 feet), Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge hangs over a valley. It provides a superb panorama of the entire grand canyon. Standing on it is like floating in the air. Only a maximum of 600 people are allowed on the bridge at one time. The bridge bottom is paved with transparent glass, to give visitors an extremely thrilling feeling and a better perspective of sightseeing. In addition, in the middle of the bridge, there is a bungee platform. When opened, it will be world’s highest bungee, measuring 270 meters (886 feet) above the ground. One can only bring a cell phone with cover and small-sized bags like a purse or waist-bag while walking on the bridge. You can leave other belongings at the left luggage office. The service fee is CNY5 per piece of small bag and CNY10 per piece of large bag. There are cable cars up to the Glass Bridge. The cable car upper terminal is only 10 minutes’ walk from the Glass Bridge.

003- YELLOW DRAGON CAVE- Discovered by eight local young men in 1983, the Yellow Dragon Cave was officially open to the public in October 1, 1984. The Yellow Dragon Cavern is a famous scenic spot in Wulingyuan Scenic Area. It is known to the world as ''a wonder of cave on earth'', ''the all-round champion among all caves'' and ''the most beautiful cave in China''. The explored area takes up 24.7 acres. It is a karst cave, full of stalagmites, stalactites, underground streams, and large caverns. Its largest caverns can be bigger than baseball fields. It is divided into dry and wet levels. You can enjoy a two-hour tour through the cave, including an 800m long boat ride and a hike with lots of steps. There are over 900 stairs to climb and long walks inside the cave. Yellow Dragon Cave is about 8 km east of the Wulingyuan Town.
Formation-The surveyed Yellow Dragon Cave has a total length of 7.5 kilometres and a depth of 140 meters. According to a survey conducted by experts, the region where Yellow Dragon Cave is located was a vast of ocean with limestone and dolomite layers on bottom million years ago. It was not until 65 million years ago the crust uplift gave birth to vadose cave (all vadose cave passages drain downslope).
i-Dragon Dance Palace-Covering an area of 6,000 square meters, Dragon Dance Palace is the smallest hall among 13 halls in Yellow Dragon Cave. Legend has it that Dragon King holds a grand dancing party there every year.
ii-Dragon Palace-It is the largest hall with an area of 15,000 square meters and a height of 40 meters on average. It is a fantastic palace filled with about two thousand stalagmites standing in various postures.
The largest stalagmite, called King’s Throne, measures 15 meters in height and 10 meters in width.
iii-Fairy Palace-The Fairy Palace features a large group of stone waterfalls, 40 meters high. It is the largest group of stone waterfalls in limestone caves in China. Apart from stone waterfalls, you can also find a real waterfall in the cave. It drops more than 27 meters.
iv-Xiangshui River-The river stretches for more than 2,800 meters. You will take a 10-minute boat ride on the river. You may have a chance to see giant salamanders. The boat ride is included in the ticket.

004- BAOFENG LAKE/ (Huang Long Dong) - The Baofeng Lake is located on the south side of Suoxiyu Village, Wulinyuan District, Zhangjiajie city. Baofeng Lake is an artificial lake created by blocking gorge and building dam. The scenic area was firstly developed by chance, it was a peaceful gorge many years ago and the local people built a reservoir (72 meters tall) within the rocks, only with the purpose of storing water for irrigation. People never expected that after the project, beautiful scenery would be created, and now it has become the famed Baofeng Lake. The shape of the lake is a square, with a length of 2.5 kilometres and a width ranged from 200 to 1000 meters. The average depth of the water is 72 meters. The water of the Baofeng Lake is clean and without pollution, as it is an alpine lake. Looking down from the hills, the lake is as a Jade surrounded in the mountains. Sailing to the centre island on the green lake, boarding on the lakeshore for a visit to the stockade village of the Eagle’s nest (Yingwo Zhai) is an agreeable experience for tourists. The Baofeng Waterfall is located right in front of the entrance gate, flying down from one hundred meters above. Visitors can cruise on Baofeng Lake.

005- YUANJIAJIE SCENIC AREA (in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park) - Yuanjiajie contains "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain". Major highlights in Yuanjiajie Scenic Area includes Bailong Lift, Fields and Gardens in the Air, No.1 Natural Bridge under Heaven, Hanging Waterfall, Mihun Bridge and Tujia Village. Yuanjiajie is a butte (steep-sided platform mountain), surrounded by higher peaks, grotesque rock pillars and deep valleys. The highlights of Yuanjiajie include the First Bridge under Heaven, Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, and 'Lost Souls Platform'. Located in the northwest part of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Hunan. Yuanjiajie is a naturally formed platform mountain, surrounded by higher summits, which are divided by deep valleys. The area is reachable from the Tianzishan Scenic Area (Emperor Mountain) by bus in 40 minutes. Yuanjiajie Scenic Area is accessible by two ways from foot of mountains: one is walking through Luancuan Slop from Golden Whip Stream to Back Garden of Yuanjiajie; the other is taking the Bailong elevator, the No.1 elevator in the world. By this super elevator, tourists can ascend on the top of a peak to get a commanding view of its famous scene - Shenbingjuhui , the scene is also nicknamed the Fields and Gardens of the Heaven for its beautiful trees, ethnic houses and paddy fields on the high mountains. Unique in their shapes and covered with pine trees, these rocks resemble a vivid Chinese painting.
005-i-BAILONG ELEVATOR-Zhangjiajie Bailong Elevator, is a glass elevator built on the side of a huge rock in the Wulingyuan in Zhangjiajie, China, 1070 ft. (330m) high. Claimed to be the world’s tallest glass elevator, Bailong Elevator is built onto the side of a huge cliff in Zhangjiajie and takes you a whopping 1,070 feet high. It is the highest outdoor elevator in the world and it has three Guinness World Records i.e. World’s tallest full-exposure outdoor elevator, world’s tallest double-deck sightseeing elevator and world’s fastest passenger traffic elevator with biggest carrying capacity but due to the potential harm caused to the surrounding landscape. It takes 1 minutes and 32 seconds to transport tourists from the bottom to the Yuanjiajie top, where they can enjoy unbelievable and fantastic views.

005-ii-HALLELUJAH MOUNTAINS- These pillars were formed by erosion and draw in upwards of 30 million tourists every year. One of these pillars was named the “Southern Sky Column,” and it stretched 3,544 feet into the air, the length of 78 school buses. In 2010 the name was changed to “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” after the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar, used photographs of the pinnacle as inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora.
005-iii-MIHUN STAGE-It is the optimum viewing platform in Yuanjiajie Scenic Area. As soon as you stand on the platform, your soul will be captured by the scenery before your eyes, hence the name Mihun Platform. Arrays of stone peaks stand out from deep valleys and soar up to sky, presenting a gorgeous view.
005-iv-BRIDGE UNDER HEAVEN-This sky bridge stretches across two mountains. It is uncommon for most of us to see a natural bridge surrounded by white clouds and oddly-shaped stone peaks. It spans over 25 meters with a vertical height of 357 meters, being a natural stone bridge with the maximum vertical heights in the world. In fact, the two mountains linked by the bridge were originally one mountain. The marvelous bridge was carved by the force of mighty wind and water.
005-v-TUJIA FOLK CUSTOM PARK- The Zhangjiajie Tujia Folk Custom Park is located in Yongding District, Zhangjiajie City. Built in 2000, the park covers an area of 5 hectares. In this replica of a typical Tujia village, tourists can experience some interesting Tujia people's facts, including folk custom, architecture, food, agriculture, military, and art. A main attraction in the Zhangjiajie Tujia Folk Custom Park is the village square, where key performances such as the Maogusu Dance, a ceremonial dance that was part of a sacrificial ceremony are performed. Another highlight of the park is the wooden 9-storied Jiuchongtian Hereditary Hall that was constructed on a steep slope without using a nail was even listed in the Guinness World record. It contains thousands of relics of the Tujia and is the "museum" of all things Tujia.
006-TIANMEN FOX FAIRY SHOW- The performance area is located in the 5 km long valley of Tianmen Mountain, 8 km from Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province. Tianmen Fox Fairy Show is a large-scale real-scene musical drama that originated from a traditional Chinese fairy tale, which showing a love story between a fox fairy and a woodsman. The love story was widespread throughout locals and Chinese. It is a world’s first real-scene musical drama with Tianmen Mountain and deep valleys as the stage background. It is open to audience from March to the following December, starting at 20:00 to 21:00 (Beijing time), no matter it is rainy or not.

007-CHARMING XIANGXI SHOW- Charming Xiangxi Grand Theatre, which can take in 2800 population, is situate in Zhangjiajie World Geopark and Wulingyuan scenic area, where have beautiful scenery and towering peaks. It integrates the traditional folk art, craft with modern sound, light and electricity.

008-XIBU STREET FOR SHOPPING-It is is located opposite the District government on Wuling Road. It consists of water bar street, the Chinese snack street, xiangxi folk shopping street, leisure inn and creative mate. Thus becoming a complex tourism commercial pedestrian street. It is the cultural tourism collection which cannot be duplicated in the core of WuLingYuan scenic spot.
