SINGAPORE TRAVEL
ofGENERAL INFORMATION-Singapore is most touristy city of the world.Today, Singapore is a bustling cosmopolitan city of high-rise buildings, landscaped gardens and heritage-rich surroundings. It is the second most densely populated country and seconds to only Monaco. It is a garden city. Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. It lies off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and is 137 kilometres north of the equator. It is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south.Singapore has a land area of about 719 square kilometres, making her one of the smallest countries in the world and the smallest in the region. Although small in size, Singapore commands an enormous presence in the world today with its free trade economy and highly efficient workforce. The strategic location in the region has enabled her to become a central sea port along major shipping routes. Across the history of the Southeast Asian region, Singapore has been referred by a variety of names, such as "Temasek" and "Singapura", the last of these is the Malay origins for the modern name of Singapore. Singapore's early immigrants came mainly from the Malay Peninsula, China, the Indian sub-continent and Sri Lanka. The original people of Singapore were made up mostly of Malays from the Malay Peninsula and Archipelago. Before becoming the cosmopolitan city of today, Singapore was just a humble fishing village, inhabited by an indigenous settlement. The city was established by Thomas Stamford Raffles as a trading post on 29 January 1819, the small sea town of Singapore soon attracted migrants and merchants from China, the Indian sub-continent, Indonesia, the Malay Peninsula and the Middle East.50% area is covered by greenery with over 50 parks and 4 natural reserve. It has large self-contained residential towns. Home to a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture. Singapore is rich in contrast and colour. In fact, Singapore embodies aspects of both East and West. Other than having a sound business infrastructure and favourable economic climate, another factor for Singapore’s rapid growth is due to a stable and competent ruling government. Singapore is a parliamentary republic with a political system that’s cantered on democracy. Today, the ethnic Chinese form 74.2% of the Singaporean population, with the country’s original inhabitants, the Malays, comprising 13.3%. The Indians make up 9.2%, and Eurasians and Asians of different origins making up a combined 3.3%. Singapore is also home to many expatriates coming from countries as North America, Australia, Europe, China, Japan and India. At present, Singapore’s population stands at 5.55 million (3.90 million citizens), with English as the main language of instruction and a mother tongue for each major ethnicity. Singapore is a world leader in several economic areas. The country is the world's fourth leading financial centre, the world's third-biggest casino gambling market (Macau, Las Vegas, Singapore, France, Atlantic City of USA)

002-SENTOSA ISLANDS - Sentosa is Singapore’s most popular island resort, one which manages to attract over 20 million visitors every year. Sentosa means peace and tranquillity in Malay. The favoured quickie getaway for local Singaporeans, Sentosa is a compact hub of fun attractions; home to the city’s best theme parks, numerous beaches, two casinos, golf course and a plethora of deluxe hotels and resorts, as well as a near infinite array of dining and drinking options.
Island History- Sentosa has always been an important part of Singapore, even in the mid 1800's when its geographical position meant it became the optimal lookout point from where to protect the city. Four forts were built here initially, and by the time the Second World War erupted the island was all but one, colossal, fortified army base. The forts built on the island were Fort Siloso, Fort Serapong, Fort Connaught and the Mount Imbiah Battery. During the Japanese occupation, Sentosa became a prison camp island where many British and Australian soldiers were executed. Once the Japanese were defeated and the island returned to British rule, it was, once again, used as an army base. It was during the 1970's that the idea of rebranding Sentosa as a tourist destination was initially conceived.
Geography- The island has an area about 5 km 2. It lies just half a kilometre away from the southern coast of the main island of Singapore. It is Singapore's fourth largest island (excluding the main island). 70% of the island is covered by secondary rainforest. The island also has 3.2 km stretch of white sand beach. Significantly large portions of land are currently being added to Sentosa due to land reclamation.

002.1-MERLION-A gigantic 37-metre tall replica of the Merlion which was completed in 1995. Positioned at the heart of the island, the Sentosa Merlion stands on a base that resembles the bagua which is believed to bring about prosperity and affluence. Each of the majestic creature’s 320 scales is shaped like the bagua too (Bagua is an auspicious tool used in Feng Shui to direct energy towards prosperity). Each of the Sentosa Merlion’s teeth represents a different ethnic group in Singapore – Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian – signifying prosperity for all citizens of Singapore. Standing strong and majestic, this must-see icon is still, by far, the largest and tallest Merlion in Singapore. If you stand on the Merlion’s head, you will be towering at 60 metres above sea level, allowing you a magnificent view of Singapore Island and the Central Business District. This is likened to the Merlion watching over Singapore. It houses two viewing galleries and a souvenir shop. The Sentosa Monorail/Sentosa Express used to pass by this gigantic statue.

Sea creatures emerge from the fountain, spouting jets of water at intervals. Sea shells, starfish, tentacles and waves flow out from the fountain onto the path. The fountain is set between rows of mature trees that provide welcome shade and many benches. Perfect for a short rest . The Merlion Walk from Imbiah Station and all the way down to Beach Station (where the Sentosa Beaches are) with a series of ramps.

The cabin then revolves slowly as it ascends the column of the tower. The view from Sky Tower, is breath-taking and giving you a 360degree view of Sentosa and the southern islands. The cabin has a capacity of 72 visitors for 7 minutes. 010-BOAT QUAY-Boat Quay used to be the hub of commerce and trade in the 1860s that stretches from Elgin Bridge to Cavenagh Bridge. Though it occupies only a small section on the south bank of Singapore River, it was the centre of trade along the river. In the early days, all ships had to sail pass the Singapore River to reach the go downs and shop houses at Boat Quay. Trade exploded, and other quays – Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay, were developed. The row of shop houses was once occupied by wholesalers as offices and godowns. Bumboats were used to transport cargo between the ship in the harbour and the quay. The cargo was then carried by the coolies from the bumboat, which moored along the river, to the shop houses. Today bumboat plying along the river carrying tourists instead of cargo on sightseeing trip. The shop houses were also being converted into pubs and restaurants. During a walking tour along the river the history of the Singapore River from a number of information boards that were being erected by the riverside can be learn. Also discover a handful of sculptures that were being placed by the riverside shows the life style of by gone era. A sculpture of The River Merchants located near the Cavenagh Bridge. It looks like merchants were negotiating a deal where the coolies were busy loading goods onto a bullock cart. The sculpture of First Generation showing five boys jumping happily into the river, a common scene in the old days. Here is the Raffles Landing Site along the Singapore River, where Sir Stamford Raffles first stepped on the island in 1819.

During the 19th century, this place was a busy place with trade activity of the bum boats in the Singapore River, travelling up and down the carrying goods and produce ready to be stored in the row of warehouses along Boat Quay and Clarke Quay. In the late 20th century, the government transformed the area into an entertainment and dining district. This is a perfect Nightspot for Food, Entertainment and Chill Out.

Three Armenian brothers set up Raffles Hotel in 1886. They were Arshak Sarkies, Aviet Sarkies and Tigran Sarkies. They also built the Adelphi Hotel. In 1827 it began to raise funds to build their own Church. The government granted the land on which the church stands to the Armenian community in 1834. By 1835, the building was completed. Consecrated by Reverend Catchick Johannes in 1836 and dedicated to St Gregory the Illuminator, the first Patriarch of the Church in Armenia, it was the second church to be built in Singapore. Over half the construction cost was donated by the Armenian community in Singapore. Considering that the Armenian community was tiny the 1824 census counted only 16 members. Armenian Street is named after the church and its Chinese name is Seng Poh Sin Chu Au (the back of Seng Poh's new building).

It was built in 1823 by Indian pioneer Naraina Pillai, he was a government clerk from Penang who arrived in Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles on his second visit to the island in May 1819. 052-THE SINGAPORE NATIONAL STADIUM -The Singapore National Stadium forms the centrepiece of Singapore Sports Hub, Opened in June 2014. The main feature of the stadium is its roof: spanning 310 metres, it is the world’s largest free-span dome.
( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_domes). The 55,000-seat stadium is a striking addition to a 35-hectare waterfront site at Kallang in south-east Singapore. It is the first stadium purpose-built for athletics, cricket, football and rugby. It has also been designed for concerts, shows and festivals with the dramatic skyline of the city of Singapore as a backdrop. The Stadium incorporates a moving tier of seats that can be pulled forward when the athletics track is not in use. This improves proximity to the pitch and thus enhances spectator experience and atmosphere. A moveable roof is another essential feature. It provides shade and thus cooling when required and of course shelter from rainfall. The roof is left open when The Stadium is not in use, keeping the grass pitch in healthy condition.

054-FORT CANNING PARK-Fort Canning Park is one of the city’s most significant historical landmarks in 18 hectares area. It is also home to Battle Box, an interesting underground tunnel complex from the Second World War. Situated behind the Singapore History Museum at Stamford Road. The hill, sacred to the Malays, also contains the shrine of Sultan Iskandar Shah, the last monarch of the old kingdom of Singapura. When Stamford Raffles came to Singapore, he built his home here - later known as Government House - on top of the hill. The British army, between 1859 and 1861, built an arms store, barracks and hospitals, and the buildings became known as Fort Canning. The decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese on 15 February 1942 was also made on the hill, in the Underground Far East Command Centre, commonly known as Battle Box. Today, only ruins of the fort are left, along with several well-preserved underground tunnels. The fort is surrounded by a quiet park which also holds an old Christian cemetery. You will also found the Battle Box, situated inside what used to be the largest underground military operations complex in Singapore. The complex was part of the Malaya Command Headquarters during World War II.
Today, Fort Canning Park is a venue for celebrations. Its expansive, sprawling lawns play host to concerts, theatre productions and festivals.
