HISTORY-During the Song dynasty (960–1279) Shanghai was upgraded in status from a village to a market town in 1074. Under the Republic of China (1912–49), Shanghai's political status was raised to that of a municipality on 14 July 1927. During the First Opium War (1839–1842), British forces occupied the city. The war ended with the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing, which allowed the British to dictate opening the treaty ports. Eight nations — Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Austria-Hungary, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom were granted concessions in Shanghai, areas that they controlled and where Chinese law did not apply. By 1932, Shanghai had become the world's fifth largest city and home to 70,000 foreigners.
GEOGRAPHY-The city proper is bisected by the Huangpu River. The most basic division of the area is Puxi, West of the river, versus Pudong, East of the river. Both terms can be used in a general sense for everything on their side of the river, but are often used in a much narrower sense where Puxi is the older central part of the city and Pudong the mass of new high-rise development across the river since the 1980s.
HUANGPU RIVER-Huangpu River is a branch of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It takes its rise from the Tai Lake. The Huangpu River wriggles like an undulating dragon from Wusong to the East Sea. The yellow and ice-free river is 114 kilometers long and 400 meters wide with an average depth of nine meters. It joins 29 kilometers north of downtown Shanghai and divides the city into two parts, east and west. The Huangpu River is a multi-functional river with the values of drinking water, shipping, fishery, flood discharge, tourism and many other aspects. The famous Shanghai Port is situated on it.

The 1,700-meters long flood-control wall, known as 'the lovers' wall', located on the side of Huangpu River from Huangpu Park to Xinkai River and once was the most romantic corner in Shanghai in the last century. Standing by the railings, visitors can have a 'snap-shot' view of the scenery of Pudong Area and Huangpu River. In 1940, the Bund became the British settlement. The twenty-six major structures, of various heights along approximately 1.5 kilometers of Zhongshan Lu and the Huangpu River, have changed little externally since the 1930s. All were constructed in western-inspired styles. At the northern end, along the riverfront, is Huangpu Park, in which is situated the Monument to the People's Heroes - a tall, abstract concrete tower which is a memorial for those died during the revolutionary struggle for Shanghai dating back to the Opium Wars. It is worth to visit and see the florid night view of the Bund. Big traditional stores no longer dominate the market since modern shopping malls, specialty stores, theatres, and international hotels have mushroomed on both sides of the street. Today over 600 businesses on the road offer countless famous brands, superior quality, and new fashions. On the Nanjing Road West locates some famous attractions, theaters and entertainment sites like Jing'an Temple, Shanghai Art Museum, Paramount Hall, etc. A trackless sightseeing train provides a comfortable tour of the night-transformed pedestrian street. The garden which is today, is the result of a five year restoration project which began in 1956. It was open to the public in September, 1961.
