TRAVEL MONACO
GENERAL INFORMATION - Monaco is a self-governed sovereign nation under the protection of France. It has been ruled by the Grimaldi family for the past 700 years (with a slight diversion during the French Revolution) and its 1918 treaty with France decreed that if the prince -or any Grimaldi prince - failed to produce a son, the territory would be ceded back to France upon his death. This was changed in 2002. If Albert II, the current prince, fails to produce a male heir, the throne will be passed to his sister Caroline. Monaco, which comprises a miniscule 485 acres/2.02Km2 in total and is Europe's smallest state after the Vatican (covers just 110 acres/0.40km2), is barely west of the Italian border and surrounded by France on all sides except for the 2.5 miles/4.1kms of coastline. It is located on the border of the French town of Beausoleil. Having a perfect geographical location between Mediterranean and mountains, Monte Carlo enjoys a moderate weather all around the year making it a popular tourist destination. The lovely location and climate of Monte Carlo attracts tourists to this gorgeous land which holds a large number of exciting cultural and sports events. Formula One fan cannot miss the exciting Circuit de Monaco which takes place in Monte Carlo each year. From tennis to poker and boxing, lots of championships are hosted in Monte Carlo. This leading tourist resort offers lots of excellent tourist destinations in its lush and pure surroundings. The principality, which is home to the most millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the world, has no natural resources, its national economy is based on tourism and banking. The Principality of Monaco and its surroundings harbour and gardens its real treasures with more than 2,50,000 m2 for a city-state of 485acres,which puts its second in Europe, just after Vienna. One of Monaco's main sources of income is tourism. Each year many foreigners are attracted to its casino (which citizens are prohibited from) and to the pleasant climate. It has also become a major banking centre, holding over €100 billion worth of funds. The Monaco-KOCHI station is served by the SNCF, the French national rail system. The Monaco Heliport provides helicopter service to the closest airport, Côte d'Azur Airport in Nice, France. Walking is by far the best way to get around Monaco, however, there are some areas, such as the Exotic Gardens, that require a large change in elevation and therefore make for rather strenuous hikes. There are also seven public escalators and elevators (all free) that help negotiate the steep slopes of the city.
HISTORY- A land grant from Emperor Henry VI in 1191, Monaco was re-founded in 1215 as a colony of Genoa. Monaco was first ruled by a member of the House of Grimaldi in 1297, when Francesco Grimaldi, known as "Il Malizia", and his men captured the fortress protecting the Rock of Monaco .In 1419, the Grimaldis purchased Monaco from the crown of Aragon and became the official and undisputed rulers of "the Rock of Monaco", and in 1612 Honore II began to style himself "Prince" of Monaco. In the 1630s, Honore II sought French protection against the Spanish forces and was eventually in 1642 received at the court of Louis XIII as "Duc et Pair Etranger". The princes of Monaco thus became vassals of the French Kings while at the same time remaining sovereign princes. As successive princes and their families spent most of their lives in Paris and through marriages with French nobilities, the House of Grimaldi, though Italian in origin, became thoroughly French in character. The principality continued its existence as a protectorate of France until the French Revolution. In 1869, the principality stopped collecting income tax from its residents—an indulgence the Grimaldis could afford by the extraordinary success of the casino. This made Monaco not only a playground for the rich, but a favoured place for them to live. Rainier III, who ruled until 2005, succeeded to the throne following the death of his grandfather, Prince Louis II, in 1949. On 19 April 1956, Prince Rainier married the American actress Grace Kelly, the event was widely televised and covered in the popular press, focusing the world's attention on the tiny principality. On 31 March 2005, Prince Rainier III, too ill to exercise his duties, relinquished them to his only son and heir, Prince Albert II. Prince Rainier died on 6 April 2005 after a reign of 56 years. His son Prince Albert II succeeded him and was thereafter titled Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco.

007- PRRINCE'S PALACE(palais du prince) - It is located in the Monaco-Ville (Old City). The Prince's palace is one of the finest examples of architecture in Monaco. The Prince's Palace was built in 1191. It is now a favourite spot of the tourists .This monumental palace has been a residence of the Monaco’s Grimaldi royal family since the 13th century. The Grimaldi family ruled in Monaco for 700 years. The Grimaldi's occupation of their palace is also unusual because, the absence of alternative palaces and land shortages have resulted in their use of the same residence for more than seven centuries. Thus, their fortunes and politics are directly reflected in the evolution of the palace. Whereas the Romanovs, Bourbons and Habsburgs could, and frequently did, build completely new palaces, the most the Grimaldi could achieve when enjoying good fortune, or desirous of change, was to build a new tower or wing, or, as they did more frequently, rebuild an existing part of the palace. Thus, the Prince's Palace reflects the history not only of Monaco, but of the family which in 1997 celebrated 700 years of rule from the same palace The history of Monaco, therefore, depends a lot on the history of this Prince's Palace. Every generation of Grimaldi family has left its marks in this opulent castle. Perhaps the most renowned former residence of this palace was Princes Grace. Today the palace is home to Prince Rainier's son and successor, Prince Albert II. The sovereign princes, although bound by constitution, are involved with the day to day running of Monaco as both a country and a business. The palace tour takes the visitors through its 15 rooms including the Throne room. The collection of Napoleon’s memorabilia lies in the South wing of the palace. Since 1960, the palace's courtyard has been the setting for open air concerts given by Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly known as the Orchestra of the National Opera). However, the palace is far more than a tourist attraction and museum. For important Monégasque events—such as Grimaldi weddings and births—the palace courtyard is opened and the assembled citizens of Monaco are addressed by the prince from the Gallery of Hercules overlooking the courtyard. The courtyard is also used to host the annual children's Christmas party. Through such events, the palace continues to play a central role in the lives of the prince and his subjects, as it has done for over 700 years. Every day at 11:55 AM, in front of the Palace's main entrance visitors can watch the changing of the guard ceremony performed by the "Carabiniers." “Carabiniers” are not only in charge of the Princes’ security but they offer Him a Guard of Honor and on special occasions, are His escorts. 006-NICE TO MONACO JOURNEY-
I-Bus 100 (Nice - Monaco - Menton)-It is a very good option and costs a mere 1 €. It runs every 15 minutes mostly, and the trip takes 30-45 minutes. It takes an absolutely scenic route along the coast, passing through seaside towns such as Villefranche and Beaulieu. There's also express bus 100X which takes the motorway and costs 4 €; obviously not as good for sightseeing.
In Nice, the Bus100 leaves from Station J.C. Bermond with first stops being Ségurane and Le Port .Arriving in Monaco, there are 6 stops to choose from (do get off at one of these as the bus continues towards Menton):Cimetière, Place d'Armes, Stade Nautique, Office de Tourisme, Place des Moulins, Les Carabiniers.Heading from Monaco towards Nice, the route is slightly different; then the Monaco stops are:Les Carabiniers, Place des Moulins, Casino (Allée Lumière), Sainte Dévote, Place d'Armes, Cimetière. The buses don't run very late: last one from Nice leaves at 20:00, and from Monaco at 20:22. First departures in the morning are about 6:00. You'll find details and full list of stops in bus 100 timetable. Local bus no-1 is the best to see the city.
II-Train-Alternatively, take the train ("Nice Ville" to "Monaco Monte Carlo"). It is faster (22 mins) and arguably easier, but costs a little more at 3.60 €. There are about 2 regional trains per hour (daytime), according to SNCF. A good thing is that the trains run much later; last one leaves from Nice 22:25 and from Monaco 23:12 (on weekdays). Train Station in Monaco-Monaco-Monte Carlo is a compact, futuristic, underground station not far from the heart of Monte Carlo. Local buses and taxis can take you the rest of the way. The Principality of Monaco has a single railway station (Monaco-Monte Carlo) on the Marseille–Ventimiglia railway line. The station was originally opened in 1867, but extensively rebuilt in 1999. The length of railway within the Principality is 1.7 km (1.1 mi). This means Monaco has the second smallest railway system in the World. Monaco does not operate its own train service; all rail services in the Principality are operated by the French operator, SNCF. SNCF trains leave the Monaco-Monte Carlo station every 15 minutes throughout the day, although services cease during early, and late hours.
The railway station is in the modern administrative Ward of Moneghetti(La Condamine Quarter), Monaco, next to the French town of Beausoleil, and the Monégasque administrative Ward of Saint Michel. Monaco station is entirely underground, and has many exits leading to different parts of the principality. Adress- Gare de Monaco-Monte Carlo
