GENERAL INFORMATION- Mauritius is said to be the paradise of the Indian Ocean.Mauritius Island offers the visitors a large variety of beautiful white sandy beaches and blue lagoons.Mauritius, known officially as the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation located in Indian Ocean near South Africa. It is a volcanic island of lagoons and palm-fringed beaches with coral reefs surrounding most of the coastline. The island is situated approximately 2400 kilometres off the South East Coast of Africa. The coastline of Mauritius is approximately 330 km long and nearly everywhere you can find the nice sandy beaches. Another big advantage of Mauritius is that the entire island is surrounded by coral reefs which have created big lagoons all around. These lagoons not only beautiful with crystal clear water, but also provide calm water conditions, ideal for swimming, bathing and snorkeling. The country includes the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues [560 kilometres (350 mi) east of Mauritius].Mauritius is known as a plural society where all the ethnic groups present: Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans live in peace and where all the ancestral cultures have been preserved. These features make the island a unique place in the world, and the Mauritians known for their tolerance and kindness towards all people. Mauritius is the only country in Africa where Hinduism is the largest religion.

The island was home of the world-famous bird Dodo, which became extinct during Dutch Mauritius (1638-1710 / occupation by Dutch East India Company). The city has numerous monuments and buildings which reflect its diverse and rich colonial history. Close to downtown are several French colonial buildings (from the 18th century), among which is the Government House. Other landmarks include Jummah Mosque, St James Cathedral, Tamil Temple, Chinese Pagoda, Theatre, Champ de Mars Racecourse.
HISTORY- The island of Mauritius was first discovered by Arab sailors, the first people to visit the island, at some time in the 9th century. The Arab sailors were not interested in settling on the island. Portuguese sailor found the island in 1505 and decided to give it the name of Cerne. However, the Portuguese did not settle permanently on the island.Portuguese used the island as a port of call and a source of fresh foods as they were more interested in protecting their trade routes with India. The Dutch settlers landed on a bay in the south-eastern part of the island, they took possession of the island in 1598.Due to the droughts, cyclones and pests problem, the new settlers abandoned the island in 1710. For some years following the Dutch departure, Mauritius remained unoccupied. The French settled on the island in 1715. They settled on the north-western side of the island and established their main harbour there, Port Louis, the present-day capital of Mauritius. During the French settlement there was a lot of development in the country. The French developed the island into an important naval base overseeing the Indian Ocean trade, and establishing a plantation economy of sugar cane. In August 1810, the British tried to take over the island but lost after a fierce battle against the French. However, the British came back in December 1810 and successfully defeated the French during the Napoleonic Wars. The British’s main focus in captivating Mauritius was to protect their main sea route from England to British India from the French who threatened the British shipping and naval route. Mauritius remained a strategically important British naval base, and later on, an air station playing an important role during World War II for anti-submarine. On 12 Mar 1968 Mauritius became an independent nation within the Commonwealth led by Prime Minister Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, also known as the "Father of the Nation".

The Tortoise Compound-Giant tortoises were once plentiful in Mauritius but were driven to the verge of extinction as sailors hunted them for food.At one point, the giant Aldabra tortoises had almost completely disappeared from Mauritius. The park has not only saved them from extinction but also gave them the ideal habitat to procreate. Some of the tortoises residing there are over a hundred years old.Since all the tortoises are either ex-pets or born and bred in captivity at La Vanille Nature Park, they are very social and perfectly okay being around humans.
Insectarium-The reserve houses an Insectarium, which is one of the world’s largest private collection of butterflies and insects. It has more than 26 000 species and 30 000 specimens from 5 continents. Mauritius is home to 40 species of butterfly, of which 5 are endemic, and here visitors will have the opportunity to see some of these beautiful and rare butterflies.
