Maldives is famous for its splendid white sandy beaches, crystal clear lagoons and peaceful tranquility of nature's blessing. The Maldives is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. It is the planet's lowest country. The Maldivian archipelago consists of about 1194 small low-lying coral islands of which few of them are just a one meter above sea level, grouped into 26 coral atolls .About 200 islands are inhabited in which 105 islands are developed as resort islands. Maldivian islands stretch more than 800 km from north to south covering a total area of about 90,000 square km of which about 99% is water.
The first settlers, it is generally believed, were Tamil and Sinhalese peoples from southern India and Sri Lanka. Traders from Arab countries, Malaya, Madagascar, Indonesia, and China visited the islands through the centuries. Maldivians are almost Sunni Muslim and the local culture is a mixture of South Indian, Sinhalese and Arab influences. The Maldives had and abundant supply of cowrie shells, a form of currency that was widely used throughout Asia and parts of the East African coast since ancient times. Shell currency imported from the Maldives was used as legal tender in the Bengal Sultanate and Mughal Bengal, alongside gold and silver. The Maldives received rice in exchange for cowry shells. Maldivian economy was traditionally based on fisheries till the emergence of tourism as its foreign currency generator in the late 20th century. Tourism being a service industry has direct and indirect links to all other major and minor industries of the economy. Most of the resorts and even the local island will accept US Dollars as payments too. Again, it is advisable for you to bring Dollars (cash) when you go to buy souvenirs at the end of your stay, as local island price souvenirs in US dollar and not in Rufiyaa. You don’t need local currency (Rufiyaa) even at the airport, as Male’ airport priced everything in US Dollars too.

It is believed that Hinduism existed before Buddhism. The Maldivians were practicing Buddhism until AD 1153,the last Buddhist king of Maldives Dhovemi converted to Islam in the year 1153. The king thereupon adopted the Muslim title and name of Sultan Muhammad al Adil. The person traditionally deemed responsible for this conversion was a Sunni Muslim visitor named Abu al Barakat. His venerated tomb now stands on the grounds of Hukuru Mosque in the capital Malé. Built in 1656, this is the oldest mosque in Maldives. Compared to the other areas of South Asia, the conversion of the Maldives to Islam happened relatively late.
In 1558 the Portuguese established a small garrison which they administered from their main colony in Goa. Which ends after expulsion by locals in 1573.
Then it remained under Dutch and British protection. In the mid-17th century, the Dutch, who had replaced the Portuguese as the dominant power in Ceylon, established hegemony over Maldivian affairs
Islands become a protectorate first of the Dutch rulers of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and later of the British who take control of Ceylon in 1796. The British expelled the Dutch from Ceylon in 1796 and included Maldives as a protected state. During the British era, which lasted until 1965, Maldives continued to be ruled under a succession of sultans. On 26 July 1965, Maldives gained independence under an agreement signed with United Kingdom. The British government retained the use of the Gan and Hitaddu facilities. In a national referendum in March 1968, Maldivians abolished the sultanate and established a republic. The last British troops left on March 29, 1976, the date thereafter celebrated in the Maldives as Independence Day. Ibrahim Nasr, the country’s first president, was succeeded in 1978 by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was re-elected to his sixth consecutive term in 2003.
GEOGRAPHY- This unique creation of nature the naturally forms 26 atolls, which for administrative purposes are made into 20 by the government. The chains stand in the Laccadive Sea, about 700 kilometers (430 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometers (250 mi) south-west of India.
Maldive’s closest countries are Sri Lanka and India. It takes about an hour to fly from Sri Lanka to Maldives, a little bit more than an hour from Trivendrum of India. Atoll-An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef, island, or series of islets. An atoll surrounds a body of water within it, called a lagoon. Sometimes, atolls and lagoons protect a central island.
Archipelago-An archipelago is called to an island group or collection of islands.
Coral Reef- Coral reefs are underwater structures made from calcium carbonate secreted by corals. Coral reefs are colonies of tiny animals found in marine waters that contain few nutrients. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, which in turn consist of polyps that cluster in groups. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated waters. Paradoxically, coral reefs flourish even though they are surrounded by ocean waters that provide few nutrients. They are most commonly found at shallow depths in tropical waters, but deep water and cold water corals also exist on smaller scales in other areas.
Dhoni- Dhoni or Doni (pronounced Dōni) is a multi-purpose sail boat with a motor or lateen sails that is used in the Maldives. MALE CITY AT ATTRACTONS & SIGHTS-
001-MALE CITY- Male is located on the southern tip of the island North Male Atoll. It is the most populated city of the Republic of Maldives with approximately 106,000 people. It is also one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The new island of Hulhumalé, in the Hululhe lagoon has been reclaimed to provide some much-needed extra space. It is home to all government ministries and departments, all companies, banks and institutions. Small, quaint, and densely settled, Malé (pronounced 'Mar-lay') is not spectacular, but quite unique as a capital city. The islet is only 1.7 kilometers long and just one-kilometer-wide, but more than 100,000 people call it home. It is the world's densest city, making it easy to explore on foot. You can walk around the entire island in about an hour, and nearly all the sights are conveniently concentrated on the north shore. The local market on the northern side of the island is a great place to catch a glimpse of local life while shopping for inexpensive but fresh fruits and vegetables. Two blocks away is the fish market, a true delight of energy and color. For more conventional souvenirs, hit up the shops at Chandhanee Magu on the northern end of the island. In Chandani Magu there is the Singapore Bazar where you can buy local handicrafts, such as necklaces, T-shirts, bracelets, masks or batik from Sri Lanka. Chaandanee Magu-This is the best place for souvenir shopping. The shops are stocked with a profusion of gifts, curios or souvenir items. Best picks include the “thudu kuna”, the Maldivian mat woven with local natural fibers. The attractive wooden miniature dhonis are a worthwhile purchase.
Shops are open until 11.00 p.m., but are closed during the 15-minute prayers. Electric power is generated in the city using diesel generators. Solid waste is transported to nearby islands, where it is used to fill in lagoons. The neighboring islands Hulhumale (artificial) and Vilingili are served by frequent and very cheap public ferries, and provide much quieter get-aways from the capital city. Male's main street Boduthakurufaanu Magu, home to banks and most government buildings, runs along the north shore. Roughly in the middle is the square of Jumhooree Maidhaan, a handy reference point since it has a giant flagpole visible from far away. The jetty #1 (the Presidential Jetty) right in front of the square and jetties #9 and #10, used by the airport ferry, at the northeastern tip of the island.
If you prefer, you can make a tour of the capital by taxi. There are many taxi centers and fares are fixed by the government. The basic fare for a single journey for a maximum of four people, from one side of the island to the other, is Mrf. 12.75 (1 USD), each luggage costs MRF 5.00.

003-WHALE SUBMARINE- Whale Submarine is the world's deep diving largest passenger submarine currently operating in Maldives. This is not a submarine for whale watching – its name is slightly misleading. It is, in fact, a submarine for looking at life on a reef. This is an excellent opportunity especially for the non divers to visit the mysterious depths of the ocean to explore the underwater world. As this is a unique service not available in many parts of the world. Whale Submarine is the only passenger submarine in South East Asia. As the submarine departs from a point off the coast, you have to get a boat either from the airport or Jetty No 1 (President’s Jetty). A boat picks up from both about 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the submarine. You should ring ahead and book a place (there are several departures daily) so the boat can pick you up. At the submarine dock (the ‘Whale House’) you pay your money, have a cool drink and board the sub. The sub takes a few minutes to get to its dive spot, and then descends to about 35m while passengers gaze out at the view through large, lens like windows. A variety of fish come very close to the windows, attracted partly by the food that the sub dispenses and partly by the sub itself. Surgeonfish, blue-striped snapper and unicorn fish are among the most commonly seen, but you will have an excellent view of smaller creatures as well, such as lionfish and anemone fish. The sub goes very close to a reef wall, and its lights illuminate crevices and show up colors that would not be visible in natural light.
The dive. On board the submarine, you will descend to a submerged reef 40 meters beneath the surface. However, the first stop is at 25 meters where you will see a colorful display of corals and different types of reef fish. In most of the dives the submarine is greeted by a school of blue or yellow-stripped Snappers. Common Lionfish, Yellow Box Fish and turtles are usually found here. Next stop at 40 meters is yet another type of coral garden and depending on current, the submarine will be beached on a sandy spot just close to a big cave. The exterior lights of the submarine will enable you to see the different types of fish taking shelter inside the cave. Occasionally White Tip Reef Sharks and Napoleons are sighted here. If you are lucky you may be able to see one of the biggest Groupers in the Maldives here on this location. This 2 meter long, Giant Grouper frequents this area and is totally devoid of fear for the submarine. In many dives, she has come close to the view-ports and showed the passengers its gaping mouth with unevenly arranged razor sharp teeth. Depending on time of the day, current and many other factors, the submarine may dive on some historical sites such as a shipwreck or a more exciting place like a shark feeding area or just another beautiful reef. Before the dive begins the crew inside the submarine would give you a briefing on that particular dive site. The entire 45 minutes tour will definitely give you an unforgettable experience. Book online or by phone, and then you'll be picked up by boat from the airport or from Jetty No 1 in Male 30 mins. beforehand and transported to the embarking platform.
Location:- Tear Drop Reef, between Male' & Villingili.
