GENERAL INFORMATION- Macau is a place of Grand casinos, nightclubs, combined with the atmosphere of the past colonial era, and emerged as a major tourist destination in Southeast Asia.It became the world's biggest gambling center in 2006. By 2002, it had become one of the world's richest cities. It is the new gambling resort capital of the world with 5 of the world's 10 largest casino resorts (The Venetian Macao-City of Dreams-Casino ponte 16-Sands Macao-MGMGrands Macao). Known as 'Oriental Las Vegas', the gambling industry in Macau is booming and has already become an important feature of the local economy. Macau is one of the Special Administrative Regions of the People's Republic of China. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta across and from Hong Kong to the west by 60 kilometers, bordered by Guangdong Province to the north and 145 kilometers from Guangzhou City. It consists of the Macau Peninsula itself and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, which are now connected by landfill forming the Cotai Strip. The total area of the Macau is 29.20km2 and has four parts as Macau Peninsula 9.30 km2, Islands of Taipa 6.70 km2, Coloane 7.60 km2 sq. km and reclaimed area COTAI 5.60 km2. The main border between Macau and China is known as the Portas do Cerco (Barrier Gate) on the Macau side, and the Gongbei Port of Entry on the Zhuhai side. With a dense urban environment, Macau has no arable land, pastures, forest, or woodland. The territory's economy is heavily dependent on gambling and tourism, but also includes manufacturing and garment manufacturing which provides about 75% of export earnings. Under the policy of "one country, two systems", the PRC's Central People's Government is responsible for the territory's defense and foreign affairs, while Macau maintains its own legal system, police force, monetary system, customs policy and immigration policy. Macau participates in many international organizations and events that do not require members to possess national sovereignty. When the he suffered a stroke in July 2009, much of the control of his holding companies went to his older children.

AIRPORT- Macau has one active international airport, known as Macau International Airport commenced operations in 1995. The airport is on an artificial island about three kilometers or two miles east of the Cotai Strip, located at the eastern end of Taipa and neighboring waters. The airport used to serve as one of the main transit hubs for passengers travelling between mainland China and Taiwan, but now with the introduction of direct flights between those two regions, passenger traffic in this regard has lessened. It is the primary hub for Air Macau. In 2006, the airport handled about 5 million passengers. The airport has low landing fees, so this attracts economy airlines. The budget airline Thai Air Asia goes to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and other cities is Asia. Tiger and Jetstar serve Singapore. Cebu Pacific and Philippines Airlines serve Manila and Clark. Sometimes, people can get amazingly low-priced tickets to and from the Philippines.
MACAU’S ATTRACTONS & SIGHTS-
001-A-MA TEMPLE- The A-Ma Temple, located in the southeast of the Macau Peninsula, is the oldest temple. It was constructed in the year of 1488 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to commemorate Mazu, the sacred sea goddess who blesses the fishermen. A-Ma Temple already existed before the city of Macau came into being. A-Ma Temple is an exemplary representation of Chinese culture inspired by Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and multiple folk beliefs. There is variety of pavilions dedicated to the worship of different deities in a single complex. It consists of the Gate Pavilion, the Memorial Arch, the Prayer Hall, the Hall of Benevolence, the Hall of Guanyin and Zhengjiao Chanlin (a Buddhist pavilion). According to legend, A-Ma, a poor girl looking for passage to Canton, was refused by the wealthy junk owners but a ordinary fisherman took her on board. A storm blew up and wrecked all but the boat carrying the girl was saved. On arrival in Macau she vanished, to reappear as a goddess, on the spot where the fishermen built her temple.

002-RUIN’S OF ST. PAUL’S CHURCH- The Ruins of St. Paul's (also known as Sam Ba Sing Tzik) stands adjacent to the famous Mount Fortress and Macau Museum. The front façade and the grand stone stairs are the only remains of the greatest church. First constructed in 1580, St. Paul's Church caught fires in 1595 and 1601. However, reconstruction started in 1602, the church was made of wood, and it was brilliantly decorated and furnished, the facade of carved stone, completed in 1637, the church became the biggest Catholic Church in East Asia at that time. Unfortunately, a violent typhoon hit Macau in 1835 and the church caught fire for the third time leaving its glory a history. From the bottom up, the structure has five tiers. The facade is 27 meters tall, 23.5 meters wide and 2.7 meters thick. The top floor is a triangle lintel under a cross; in the middle of the lintel is a copper dove. The dove is surrounded by the sun, moon, and stars. There is a statue of the baby Jesus Christ with the tools that were used to nail him to the cross. The major figures portrayed in the lintel are the Virgin Mary, the Holy Father, some Holy Saints, and Jesus Christ.The middle two floors reflect missionary endeavor. The Ruins of St. Paul's has been restored during 1990 and 1995. No entry fees, and there are stairs to climb up and see the view from above. Nowadays, the facade of the Ruins of St. Paul's functions symbolically as an altar to the city. Resorted into a museum, the façade is buttressed from behind and allowing tourists to climb up to the windows to get a closer look at the stone carvings and have a panoramic view of the city.

003-SENADO SQUARE (Largo do Square) – Senado Square (Largo do Senado) is a public square in Macau. It is located in the central area of the Macau Peninsula. Covering an area of 3,700 square meters (4,425 square yards), this is one of the four largest squares in Macau; the others being Praça do Centro Cultural, Praça do Lago Sai Van and Praça do Tap Seac. This area is witness to the history of Macau as an entry into western countries to China in the past. The square is so named since Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it has been in front of the Leal Senado Building. During the era of Portuguese control this is where the local authorities used to review the troops on their inaugurations. In center there is a beautiful fountain.
Almost in every corner of this square displays the architects of European-style buildings. The square is surrounded by pastel colored neo-classical buildings, creating a consistent and harmonious Mediterranean atmosphere. It is paved with a wave-patterned mosaic colored stones created by the Portuguese. In the early 1990s, the authority hired some Portuguese experts to pave the square with a wave-patterned mosaic of colored stones. From then on this area has become a popular place for cultural activities in Macau. Walk to the southeast along the Av. De Almeida Ribeiro (San Ma Lo) from the square, and you will find the Grand Lisboa, which is a casino hotel and is known for its magnificence (500meters). Walk to north of the church and you will arrive at the Ruínas de S. Paulo (Ruins of St. Paul) about 600 meters. There are shopping centers and traditional Chinese restaurants around the square. 004-LEAL SENADO BUILDING-This is regarded as the most outstanding example of Portuguse architecture and has a public library on the first floor. Originally built in 1784, this was Macau's first municipal chamber, a function it maintains to the present. The name "Leal Senado" ("Loyal Senate") derives from the title "City of Our Name of God Macau.” The "Leal Senado" Building is neo-classical in design and has retained all its original master walls and primary layout, including the courtyard garden in the back. Inside the building on the first floor there is a ceremonial meeting room that opens onto an elaborate carved library styled after the library of Mafra Convent in Portugal, and a small chapel.
005-ST. DOMINIC’S CHURCH- This is Baroque style of seventeenth century churches which was influenced by both Portuguese and Spanish styles. The ceiling inside is covered with decorative patterns amongst which a crown pattern is significant just above the main altar. Located right in the heart of Senado Square of Macau at Largo de São Domingos. Founded in 1587AD, simply with wooden planks and an erected cross as a small chapel by three Spanish Dominican priests who originally came from Acapulco in Mexico, this church is also connected to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary. It was here that the first Portuguese newspaper was published on Chinese soil, A Abelha da China ("The China Bee"), on 12th September 1822. The bell tower, at the back of the building, has been modified into a small Museum of Sacred Art on its third floor, now exhibiting a collection of around 300 artifacts that illustrate the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Asia. St. Domingo's Church annually becomes one of the performing grounds of the annual 'Macau International Music Festival'. Visitors can first press the doorbell and then enter it through the east side door. Then passing across a long aisle, you will come into the interior of the church. Behind the main church building, there is a small museum containing famous marbles and legacies from St. Paul's Cathedral.

006-MACAU TOWER & TOWER ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES - Macau tower is also known as' Macau Sky Tower. "The tower has a height of 338 meters (about 1,108 feet) from ground level to the highest point at antenna spire. Renowned for its observation deck. The steel mast on top of the Tower is 90m tall. Opened on 19th December, 2001. It is an elegant construction offering magnificent panoramic views all over Macau and much of the Pearl River Delta from its indoor observation deck and revolving restaurant seating 250 persons which takes 60 minutes to make one revolution. The Bungy Jump and Sky Jump is the second highest commercial sky jump in the world, after Vegas' Stratosphere sky jump at 260 meters.

007-MACAU FISHERMAN’S WARF- Macau Fisherman's Wharf is a 28 acres’ park of which 40% is reclaimed from sea and the first-ever cultural, themed and creative attraction in the tourism industry of Macau. It is centrally located in the outer harbor at Freguesia da Sé and it is not purely a theme park, but also combines dining, shopping, entertainment, accommodation, convention and exhibition facilities in one single location which takes just a 5-minute walk from the Macau-HK Ferry Terminal and Heliport. 008- KUM LAM ECUMENICAL CENTRE- Kun Lam Ecumenical Centre is located on an artificial island connected to Av. Dr. Sun Yat-sen, NAPE, by a 60-meter long causeway. Located on the Outer Harbor, this statue is dedicated to Goddess of Kun Lam (Goddess of Mercy) and the statue is made up of approximately 50 bronze castings, weighs 50 tons and measures 20 meters high. Inaugurated on 21st March 1999, to promote mutual respect and friendship among all peoples and civilizations.

009-LOTUS SQUARE- The lotus is the city flower of Macau. Standing in Lotus Square next to the Forum and across Grand Prix Museum, the large sculpture of "Lotus Flower in Full Bloom" presented by the State Council of China in 1999, marks the return of sovereignty of Macau. The sculpture, made of gilded bronze and weighs 6.5 tons, is 6 meters high and the diameter of the flower is 3.6 meters at maximum. The major part is composed of a stem, petals and pistil, with a total of 16 components. The lotus flower, which is in full bloom, symbolizes the everlasting prosperity of Macau. The base of the flower consists of 23 pieces of red granite.There are three layers of red granite at the base, which are in the shape of lotus leaves, signifying the Macau Peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island. The square has become a great site to hold various activities since it came into use. The most well-known is the flag-raising ceremony at 08:00 every morning. The Square is just across the China Foreign Affairs Office Building. Wine Museum and Grand Prix Museum are nearby.

010- NAM VAN LAKE CYBERNETIC FOUNTAIN-Spectacular shows of cascading water and light can be seen on Nam Van Lake opposite the Headquarters of the Government of Macau SAR. The fountain, constructed by a Portuguese- Spanish company, was moved from the Reservoir to this new site since March 1999. It is equipped with 86 spouts and lit by 288 colored spotlights. The tallest water jet reaches 80 meters in height.
011- ST. AUGUSTINE'S SQUARE- This Square gathers various classified buildings, such as St. Augustine's Church, Dom Pedro V Theatre, St. Joseph's Seminary and Sir Robert Ho Tung Library. The cobblestone pavement unifies the area and reflects a traditionally Portuguese streetscape.
012-MACAU JOCKEY CLUB – Macau Jockey Club was formerly the Macau Trotting Club. In 1989, the Trotting Club changed ownership and was transformed into the present Macau Jockey Club for flat-racing. The Macau Jockey Club has races all year round. Racing Season starts in September and ends at the end of August in the following year. Basically, there are two race meetings per week, night meeting on Fridays and day meeting or twilight meeting on weekends. The races of the Macau Jockey Club are conducted in a clockwise direction. The most common distances for turf races are: Short distances 1100M and 1200M, Middle distances 1400M, 1500M, 1700M and long distances of 1800M and 2000M. The Taipa racecourse is a professional set up. Set amidst the hills and greenery of Taipa Island, the racecourse boasts a 15,000 seater grandstand. 013-SIR ROBERT HO TUNG LIBRARY- This building was constructed before 1894 and was originally the residence of Dona Carolina Cunha. Hong Kong businessman Sir Robert Ho Tung purchased it in 1918, using it as his retreat. He passed away in 1955 and in accordance with his will, the building was presented to the Macau Government for conversion into a public library.
014- GRAND PRIX MUSEUM-Opened 1993 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Macau Grand Prix, which features a number of automobile and motorbike races and takes place every year in November starts on a Thursday and ends on Sundays on the second or third week, the first two days are scheduled for practicing and qualifying. Guia Street Circuit consist of 3.8 mile around Macnese Streets and Formula 3 cars can reach a top speed of 260km/h. It started in 1954 due to the enthusiasm of a group of Macau residents and the support of the authorities. Today it is an international sports event that attracts thousands of tourists and racing enthusiasts to Macau, to watch the classic "Guia Race" and the "Formula 3 Grand Prix". As it takes place on a street circuit, which inevitably leads to a comparison with Monte Carlo. In celebration of the 50th Macau Grand Prix, the Macau Government Tourist Office has carried out extensive renovations and modernization of the Museum. The Museum pays tribute to individuals who have made extensive contributions to the success of the Grand Prix, namely Teddy Yip, Paul Du Toit, Laurel, Ayrton Senna and John Corsmit, among others.

015-MACAU SCIENCE CENTRE- The Macau Science Center is recognizable by its silvery, cone-shaped exterior. There are fourteen galleries arranged in a spiral and accentuated by an arch shape. After Beijing and Hong Kong, Macau is the third city in the world to possess the 8000 x 8000 pixel screen equipment. The Center also generates 3D effects via a high definition 3D projection system in the Space Theatre of the Planetarium, the first digital system to be equipped with ultra-high definition (8000 x 8000) and 3D visual effects in the world - all designed to give visitors an entertaining yet educational insight into the fascinating world of science. In addition, a model of the Shenzhou-VII spaceship and a number of automatic intelligent robots are featured in the brand-new Macau Science Center.

016-GARDEN OF COMMANDER HO YIN- Comendador Ho Yin Garden extends from the rotunda on the Avenida Rodrigo Rodrigues, which features the Orient Arch (inaugurated on 10 June 1996 ,casted in iron and copper, the orient arch stands 28 m tall and extends 35m across the underpass was meant to symbolize the multicultural aspect of Macao,2 x 9 figures; 99), to the Avenida de Amizade. A road cuts the Garden into two parts, which are accessible to each other through the underground car park built in 2005. The part nearby Avenida Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues has a fountain, fitness training equipments, children’s playground, a badminton court and many seats. The Library of Garden of Commander Ho Yin, which is further down the pathway, is a nice place to spend some time during holidays.

017-VASCO DA GAMA GARDEN- The Vasco da Gama Garden and the Victory Garden were created at the end of the 19th century. They used to be part of a long avenue, the Avenida Vasco da Gama built in 1898, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the fleet of Vasco da Gama to India. Ficus rumphii trees were planted along this road, 500 meters long and 65 meters wide. These trees, some of them still in existence, gave a country look to this road. In the Vasco da Gama garden which is in front of the Royal Hotel, a heroic bust commemorates Vasco da Gama.

018-MACAU GIANT PANDA PAVILION- Nestled against a hill side in Seac Pai Van Park in Coloane. The Macau Giant Panda Pavilion is home to two rare giant pandas, Kai Kai and Xin Xin. They count amongst the 320 giant pandas living in breeding centers and zoos around the world and are part of an endangered species that has only 1600 left living in the wild. Kai Kai and Xin Xin are as gifts from the Mainland Chinese Government to Macau to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Macau’s reunification with China. The pavilion comprises two 330m2 indoor activity quarters and a 600m2 outdoor yard for the inhabitation of the giant pandas and a 900m2 indoor exhibit area.

019-A MA CULTURAL VILLAGE- The development of the A-Ma Cultural Village was started during the Chung Yeung festival in 2001 shortly after the A-Ma Cultural and Tourism Festival of Macau. Today, construction of the Qing Dynasty-style complex is nearly finished. Surely the village, which comprises a bell tower, drum tower, carved marble altar in the Tin Hau Palace, a dressing hall, museum and shops. Close to the world's tallest statue of the goddess A-Ma (or named Tin Hau) on the mountaintop on Macau's Coloane Island, A-Ma Cultural Village is a 7,000-sq. m. cultural complex which celebrates the legend of the Goddess of Seafarers. Visitors approach the village by six rows of stairs carved with auspicious Chinese patterns like of the roaring tiger, the double lion, the five cranes and double phoenix that lead to the Tin Hau Palace.

020-ALTO DE COLOANE PARK & STATUE OF A-MA- There is a statue of the Goddess A-Ma. visible from far out in the South China Sea, with a height of 19.99 meters (commemorating the year Macau once again became part of China). The statue is on the Coloane Peak (170m), and is reached by the Estrada do Alto de Coloane.

021-BRIDGES IN MACAU-There are following bridges in Macau- i-Bridge of Friend Ship (Ponte de Amizade)- Built after the Macau-Taipa Bridge, it is the second one that connects the peninsula and Taipa across the Zhujiang River Estuary. It is the longest of the three bridges crossing Baía da Praia Grande between Macau Peninsula and Taipa. This bridge was constructed in 1994, it is 4.7kms long and is a four-lane, two-way bridge that connects Macau Peninsula near the Reservatório and Taipa Island at Pac On. There are two crests on the bridge to allow for the passage of sea traffic. The highest point of the bridge is 30 meters (98 ft.) above sea level. Opened to traffic in March 1994, it is the longest of the three bridges.

022-BARRIER GATE (portas do Cerco) - Barrier Gate of Macao is the historic parting between the Chinese mainland and the Macao peninsula. This Macao Gate was made of granite stones traditionally marked the border between this former colonial possession of Portugal and China. This is a check point at Zhuhai and was built in 1870 a European style gate. The modernized Border Gate Square with fountain at the center and surrounded by plants. It has an underground passenger terminal, 17 bus lines service the terminal and the taxi stand is on the ground floor. The gate remains open from 7 am to midnight for the tourists. Multi-colored fiber optic lights mounted underneath the sphere provide a continually changing effect, not only for the sphere but for the surrounding retail environment. ii- Vquarium-There are four video walls measure nearly 61 feet wide and 22 feet tall. It weighs 11 tons (10,000 kg).Behind each of the four sections sits a rear projector that displays images on the acrylic. 005-LISBOA HOTEL & CSINO (at Macau Peninsula) - Casino Lisboa is one of the most famous hotel casinos in Macau. Located at central business district and 5 minutes from Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal and 15 minutes’ drive from Macau Airport. The casino is owned by the, Stanley Ho company. This three-story complex was built in late 1960. The original casino and the 12-storey round hotel tower were built in 1970. A 270-room extension was added in 1991 for a total of 927 rooms. The main building looks like a bird cage. Seen from afar, it also looks like a giant boat. The main gate is located at the junction of Avenida do Infante D. Henrique and Avenida da Amizade. It looks like a big mouth of a tiger. Tourists and gamblers will feel threatened when seeing it, so they prefer to enter the casino through the side left door. On the ceiling of the lobby is painted a Portuguese-style boat confronting a strong storm. 011- THE 13- Named The 13, after Hung’s lucky number, the hotel be the most expensive hotel ever built, more than US$7 million is believed to have been spent on each room, of which there will be 200. The smallest of the suites available, Villa du Comte, is the hotel’s as ‘entry-level accommodation’. The room measures 2,000 square feet and has a marble Roman bath, framed by vaulted ceilings, which fits up to eight people and is covered by a retractable marble lid when not in use.
