HISTORY- Until the 17th century, when the Portuguese occupied the area, followed by the French, then Dutch and finally British. During these occupations, the people of Dubai made their living by pearling. In 1793, the Bani Yas tribe assumed political power and settled in Abu Dhabi. Dubai later became a dependency. This period of Dubai history was beset with many tribal wars. In 1833, Maktoum Bin Butti of the Bani Yas tribe settled on the Shindagha Peninsula at the mouth of the Creek, declaring the town's independence from Abu Dhabi. His dynasty still rules Dubai today. Dubai came under the protection of the United Kingdom by the Exclusive Agreement of 1892, in which the UK agreed to protect Dubai against the developing interests of France, Germany, and Russia in the Persian Gulf. Though the pearling trade collapsed around 1930, Dubai’s status as the region’s major port continued to grow. After years of exploration, oil was discovered in Dubai in 1966. On 2 December 1971, Dubai, together with Abu Dhabi and five other emirates (Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain.), formed the United Arab Emirates after their former protector Britain, left the Persian Gulf in 1971.
GEOGRAPHY- Dubai is situated on the Persian Gulf coast of the United Arab Emirates and is roughly at sea level (16 m or 52 feet above). 012-DUBAI SOUKS-Souks are the Arabic Markets, where all kinds of goods are bought sold and exchanged. Traditionally, dhows from the Far East, China, Ceylon and India would discharge their cargoes and the goods would be haggled over in the souks adjacent to the docks. The Souks are located on both banks of the Creek, but predominantly in Deira. One can cross between the two banks of Creek in about ten minutes on one of the many Abras (small wooden dhows) that line of Creek, it only costs 50 fils. It is wise to visit when the weather is a little cooler in the late afternoon, but for early birds the souks open 07:00-12:00. They then re-open between 17:00-19:00, every day except Friday, when they only open in the afternoon. Thursday and Friday evening are the busiest times as this is the weekend for many people. This is a great time to witness the souk trading.
i-Fish Market-Smelly- but just the spot for the non-squeamish seafood. The fish market is worth a trip for a few snapshots to show the folks at home.
ii-Gold Souk-This is what many people around the world primarily recognize Dubai for-The City of Gold. As people race straight from the plane to the Gold Souk, they are not disappointed. Streets and streets of shops are aligned with sparking windows and the choice is impressive, are the prices. Besides gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, opals and amethysts line the windows in decorative display, and pearls are extremely cheap compared to western prices.
iii- Spice Souk-A wonderfully different experience, the spice Souk has narrow streets and an aroma so unique, it’s like walking into another era. The place seems to have downsized in the past year and the rows of stalls displaying spice laden sacks are fast diminishing.
iv-Textile Souk -The shops in Bur Dubai’s Textile Souk are a treasure trove of textile, colors, textures and weaves from the world.

013- DUBAI GOLD SOUK IN DEIRA - The Dubai Gold Souk is one of the largest gold retail markets in the world. The world renowned Deira Gold Souk has been the best of gold markets for millions of women. The souk is located in the heart of Dubai's commercial business district in Deira, in the locality of Al Dhagaya. The souk consists of over 300 retailers in the area of just half a square kilometer that trade almost exclusively in jewelry. The collection of gold being offered to shoppers at the gold souk in Deira must certainly be one of the finest and extensive collections of gold being sold anywhere in the world. The windows of the gold shops at the Deira Gold Souk appear to be completely filled with thousands of beautifully designed 22 and 24 carat gold items. What makes shopping for gold at this Deira souk so special and worthwhile is the fact that the gold prices are among the lowest in the world due to low gold prices as well as no sales tax. All gold is sold by its weight. The final price (wt+making charges) of your purchase is once again determined by your negotiation skills (on making charges) , as the gold items are not price tagged. The quality of the merchandise found here is strictly controlled by the government. The Souk’s ambiance could be best experienced at night.According to some estimates, the Souk holds approximately 10 tons of gold at any given time and about 20 percent of the world’s gold passes through this market. Even if you don’t intend to shop here, it’s well worth the visit.

019- AL BASTAKIYA AREA-Al Bastakiya is a historic district in Dubai. Together with Al Shindagha, Al Bastakiya is one of the oldest residential areas in the city of Dubai. Al Bastakiya is named after the Bastak region of Iran. The locality lies along Dubai Creek and includes narrow lanes and wind towers, as well as the Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest existing building in Dubai. The construction of Al Bastakiya dates back to the 1890’s. In its prime, the locality was capable of supporting 60 housing units, most of which were separated by narrow, winding lanes. Traditionally a stronghold of rich residents, the demographic of the locality changed with the discovery of oil, which resulted in many rich families relocating to other parts of the city. Al Bastakiya is unique in its architecture. The wind tower, called Barjeel, is in every house of Al Bastakiya. The number of Barjeels a house has indicates the wealth of the owner family. Moreover, the doors of the houses are related to cultural behaviors. For example, the main door of the house is large whereas the inner door is short, and this is because when men are entering the house they should bend down not facing women directly. It’s a lovely area to wander around and get a feel for how Dubai must have been in the old days- definitely a must do for all residents and tourists alike.
