GENERAL INFORMATION- Cannes is located in the French Riviera. It is famous for its Film Festival, and is very busy tourist destination. Cannes offers wonderful weather, a huge choice of hotels and apartments, restaurants and entertainment for every taste, shops for all. Fantastic beaches and activities such as sightseeing, sailing, diving, fishing, cricket, golf, tennis. During the festival, fans can see actors, celebrities, and directors up close and in person on the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals.
HISTORY-There was only neighbouring islands of Lerina (now St Honorat) and Lero (now St Marguerite), which were as key trading ports in the fourth century AD. It was a tiny fishing village had existed on the site of today’s city, although it was fairly insignificant. Fearing a Saracen invasion, in the 11th century the monks expanded beyond the island. They procured the hill of Le Suquet on the mainland and built a watchtower on top, which still stands in Cannes' Old Town. The concerned monks also strengthened their fortifications on the island, using their vast wealth to extend and bolster the monastery. But it was on the mainland that most of the changes were taking place, following the construction of the watchtower, Le Suquet witnessed a period of expansion. Around 1530, Cannes detached from the monks who had controlled the city for hundreds of years and became independent Due to the improvement in living conditions attracted the English aristocracy, who also built winter residences. In Cannes, projects such as the Boulevard Carnot, the rue d'Antibes and the Carlton Hotel on the Promenade de la Croisette were carried out. With the 20th century came new luxury hotels such as the Miramar and the Martinez. Winter tourism gave way to summer tourism and the summer casino at the Palm Beach was constructed. CANNES ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTS-
001-CANNES BAY-The city of Cannes is located on a large bay on the Mediterranean Sea. The old port (Vieux Port) is situated at the west end of the Nice beach and Port Canto is located at the other end. A tree-lined street called the Boulevard de la Croisette runs along the seafront. Several grand hotels including the Carlton Hotel and the Martinez Hotel are located on Boulevard de la Croisette. The Cannes beaches are 7.5 kilometres long with yellow sand.
002-CANNES FILM FESTIVAL/FESTIVAL DE CANNES- Founded in 1946, it is one of the most prestigious and publicized film festivals in the world. International Film Festival Cannes is an annual film festival held in Cannes in the month of May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres. The film festival given massive media exposure, the non-public festival is attended by many movie stars and is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.
003-PROENADE DE LA CROISETTE-In 1850 the Croisette was a path along the sea and about 2kms long. Now it is a renowned avenue with prestigious shops and luxury hotels including Carlton, Martinez and Majestic. The Croisette is known for the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival is held.
004-PALAIS DES FESTIVALS -The City of Cannes is famous for the many art festivals that it hosts each year, the most important of which is the Cannes Film Festival. Many of the events, including the Cannes Film Festival, take place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, located on Boulevard de la Croisette. The history of the “Palais des Festivals et des Congres de Cannes” is linked with the Cannes Film Festival. There was an old building where today JW Marriot Hotel stands and was constructed in 1947 for the festivals. Due to success in 1979 a new building was constructed at the site of Municipal Casino. It has 15 auditorium and hosts over 50 events. Film directors, actors and other International celebrities leave a print of their hand with their signature, like in Los Angeles at the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. These prints are laid on the Esplanade Pompidou and in the Parks.
005- CANNES CITY HALL/HOTEL DE VILLE-The Cannes City Hall (Hotel de Ville) is an elegant building situated between Allees de la liberte Charles de Gaulle and Rue Felix Faure, just below the castle in Cannes France
006-CARLTON HOTEL-Built in 1909,the luxurious 338-room Carlton Hotel Cannes is a popular residence for movie stars, particularly during the Cannes Film Festival which is held each spring.
007-MARTINZ HOTEL- The Martinz Hotel Cannes it is situated on the tree-lined Boulevard de la Croisette, this attractive hotel attracts many wealthy visitors to Cannes.
008- ALLES DE LA LIBERTE CHARLES DE GAULLE-The Alles de la Liberte Charles de Gaulle is a short street in the heart of Cannes near the Gare Maritime and the Vieux Port (Old Port). The Marche aux Fleurs (flower market) and the Hotel de Ville (Nice City Hall) can be found in this district of Cannes.
009-RUE D’ANTIBES-The Rue d'Antibes is a road and has many expensive shops and cater to the rich and famous can be found along this famous street. All sorts of designer clothing, furniture and jewellery can be found on Rue d'Antibes.
010-CANNES CASTLE- Cannes Castle are on top of a hill ”Suquet” overlooking the city of Cannes and the Mediterranean Sea and port, the Croisette and Forville market . Visitors to Cannes can hike up to the castle and enjoy a wonderful view and a visit to the Musee de la Castre (Castle Museum), the Square tower and the Notre Dame Esperance Church is also located on the hilltop. Below the Suquet is old port.
011-NOTRE DAME de ESPERANCE CHURCH- The Notre Dame Esperance Church is located on the Suquet Hill in the Old Cannes, at the west end of Cannes Beach. A stunning view of Cannes and the Cote d'Azur can be seen from the castle wall near the church. Completed in 1648, the church has been repaired and reopened in 2013. Its charm lies in its wood panelling and a collection of 19th century paintings, including a fresco. From the ancient rampart wall in front of the church, see the port and the bay to the Cap de la Croisette. There is a La Castre Museum (free first Sunday of every month) where, besides an art gallery featuring views of Cannes, you can walk amongst ancient artefacts of the classical world.
012-CANNES CITY PARK AT SQUARE VERDUN- A beautiful park with flowers, trees and rosebushes can be found at the east end of Plage de la Croisette in Cannes France. Tourists to Cannes can enjoy a leisurely stroll from the Cannes City Hall along the waterfront to this pretty park, which is located at Square Verdun Roserale. The Casino Palm Beach is located nearby.
013-CASINO CROISETTE- The Casino Croisette is located across from the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, where the Cannes Film Festival is held each spring. The second one is situated across from the Cannes Beach at the Hilton Hotel.
014-VILLA ROTHSSCHILD- The Villa Rothschild is now the main Cannes library - Mediatheque Noailles and is open to the public. It was built in 1881 in the neoclassical style and during WWII, it was occupied by the German Kammandantur. The villa is well worth a visit to see the splendour of the building, the finely carved oak wood panelling and plasterwork, as well as its oil paintings. Located at 1 Av Jean de Noailles, off Av Picaud on the road to La Bocca. It is Open Tuesday-Saturday, 8am-3pm. Entry is free.
015- VILLA DOMERGUE - The Villa Domergue is one of Cannes' hidden treasures. In the twenties Jean-Gabriel concentrated on portraits, mainly of women and is claimed to be the inventor of the pin-up. He threw amazing parties, hosted the first film festival and designed posters for the early years of the film festival. Every May the villa, which they bequeathed to the City of Cannes, entertains the festival jury. In summer it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 3pm to 7pm, entrance 3.40€.
016-CANNES BEACHES- Cannes has 15 kilometres long coastline. In which seven and a half kilometres of wonderful yellow sandy beaches. On the beach there are jelly fish until the end of September. So protection from jelly fish is needed. There is a 550 meter long underwater barrier which acts like a coral reef to prevent massive waves hitting the beach along the Croisette. The town has planted scores of palm trees on the public beaches to provide welcome shade. There are five beach volley ball courts open to all from 8am till midnight - located near kiosks 16 and 33. Also at these points are to be found a host of water sport facilities. Kite surfing, stand up paddle and windsurfing are best at Palm Beach,rental are available. The 33 private beaches and restaurants are mainly in the town along the Croisette. Scattered along the private beaches in town are public beaches, such as Plage Mace. There are two municipally managed beaches in town - Mace and Zamenoff where you can hire sunbeds and parasols. No food or drink is sold on them. It's illegal to make love on the beach day or night or in any public place. Since 1990 it's also illegal to take a midnight dip, play ball games after midnight or to sleep on the beach. There has to be two meters space between the water's edge and the sunbeds on private beaches to allow people to walk by. The only nudist beach is on Ile de Sainte-Marguerite.
017-ILE ST MARGUERITE (ST MARGUERITE ISLAND) -It only takes a 15-minute boat ride from Cannes to get there, it is the nearest island to the mainland .It is famous for the legend of The Man in the Iron Mask 11 years to leave this tiny, forested island. The mysterious individual was believed to be of noble blood, but his identity has never been proven. His cell can be visited in the Fort of St Marguerite or Fort Royal, now renamed the Musée de la Mer (Museum of the Sea).This museum also houses archaeological discoveries from shipwrecks off the coast of the island, including Roman and Saracen ceramics. There is a regular boat service from the mainland.
018-SAINT HONORAT ISLAND-This island was founded in 5th century by Saint-Honorat. The island is owned by Cistercian monks who cultivate vines and produce wine .The Saint-Honorat island is the second largest of the Lérins islands, about a mile off shore from the French Riviera town of Cannes. The island is approximately 1.5 kilometres in length (East to West) and 400 meters wide. The island retains a monastery, which is home to 20 Cistercian monks, and is a popular tourist attraction offering pleasant woodland surroundings. Points of interest include a number of disused chapels erected by monks on the island at different points in history, as well as the remains of a Napoleonic cannon ball oven and a Second World War gun emplacement. The Abbey of Lérins and the 15th Century fortified monastery are open to visitors, and a monastery shop sells various monastic goods, including the fine wines, the spirits, and the olive oil produced on the island, by the monks. The modern monastery is closed to visitors, although it is used as a Christian retreat.
019-MUSÉE DE LA CASTRE (CASTRE MUSEUM) -The Musee de la Castre, on the hilltop of Le Suquet, is housed in the former chateau of the monks of the Lérins Isles and the 12th-century chapel of St Anne.Lérins Isles and the 12th-century chapel of St Anne. Nineteenth-century paintings by local artists depict images of Cannes under rosy skies with palm trees, fishing boats and ladies. There is also a fascinating collection of 200 musical instruments, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern antiquities and an ethnology display. Guided tours in English are available on request.
020- THE PAINTED WALLS OF CANNES-Since 2002 the Municipality of Cannes has been commissioning artists to paint vast, film-related pictures on the side of local buildings. Now about there are 14 paintings scattered around the city, which celebrate Cannes’ legendary connection with the glamorous world of cinema. They are at i- The one is near the bus station (left) and depicts 100 years of cinema. Can you spot Mickey Mouse and R2-D2 or Batman and Superman. ii- Six sizzling screen kisses are emblazoned on a wall at bd de la Republique from Gone with the Wind to Titanic. iii- Cannes' film-car museum mural at the Berthelot car park, in Republique, features Mad Max to Starsky and Hutch, Bonny and Clyde to Ghostbusters and many more and Charlie Chaplin is to be found at 10 Bd Vallombrosa; Marilyn Monroe at 16 Bd d'Alsace, Buster Keaton at 29 Bd Victor Tuby; Gerard Philipe, born in Cannes, 3 Bd Victor Tuby; Alain Delon in Plein Soleil at Av Francis Tonner; Harold Lloyd at 9 rue Louis Braille; and Jean Gabin at Place de la Gare (railway station).
021-LE GRAND HOTEL- This hotel is by the sea in Cannes, set on its own private sand beach within minutes of Croisette Beach, La Croisette, and Cannes Harbour. Also nearby are Palace of Festivals and Congress Hall and Museum of the Sea.
022-HOTEL MAJESTIC- Le Majestic is a famous prestige Grand Hotel of 1923 on the Croisette at Cannes. 1 km (5 mn) from the gare de Cannes, and faces the palais des Festivals on the Croisette.
023-COLLINE DU CHÂTEAU-It is situated on a hill with beautiful seaside view. It is surrounded by a beautiful park, with indigenous vegetation, waterfall, play areas for children, and much more. To access the summit, climb the stairs, or take the lift from Rue des Ponchettes at the foot of Bellanda Tower. Colline du Château is an artist’s inspiration. Boasting some of the most beautiful panoramic vistas over the Baie des Anges, Old Nice, and the harbour.
024-GALERIE MARCHANDE GRAY D'ALBION- It is the biggest such place in Cannes, filled with every type of chic and stylish boutique. Goods on offer at Galerie marchande Gray d'Albion include jewellery, wristwatches, La perla lingerie, paintings and more. Gallery marchande Gray d'Albion is situated conveniently between La Croisette and Rue d'Antibes, which means it’s very easy to reach from the centre of town. There are also a number of cafes and restaurants around Galerie marchande Gray d'Albion as well.
025-PETITS TRAINS DE CANNES- It is a little train that passes by all of the city’s well known sights. The Petits Trains de Cannes tour begins along the famous Cannes beach front, passing by luxury hotels and superb facades, before stopping off at the wonderful Palais de Festivals. Alternatively, you can take the second option (there are two routes) and journey Petits Trains de Cannes along the old town route of Suquet.
026-SOUVENIR-The Cicada is the symbol of Provence. During the summer we can hear the male's mating song all day long. The Cicada has tymbals on the side of its abdomen and the male, by contracting them, creates a clicking sound and when relaxing the muscle another click. The body acts like a resonance chamber amplifying the sound. The name Cicada derives directly from the Latin meaning tree cricket.
