They are hills made of limestone left over from coral reefs during the Ice Age when the island was submerged. The conical shape hills were the result of thousands of years of weathering of marine limestone by rain water and air erosion. The Chocolate Hills are considered one of Philippine's natural wonders and Bohol is often referred to as the Jewel of the Philippines. They appear on the provincial seal of Bohol.

001-CHOLCOLATE HILLS - They are more than 1,268 cone-shaped hills .Why they are called the Chocolate Hills. It’s because these hills, which are usually covered in green grass, dry up and turn chocolatey brown in color during the dry season. There are spread over an area of 50 square kilometers in the towns of Carmen, Batuan, and Sagbayan in Bohol. And, while the hills do vary in size, looking at these from afar, it seems like they’re almost symmetrical in shape. This results in a majestic landscape that might make you think it’s a man-made creation. Trees grow on the base of the hills and are lush and verdant rings around the almost bare cone-shaped hills resulting in its awesome natural beauty. The hills are not huge; the highest one barely reaches 120 meters in height. Even so, most hills are between 30 and 50 meters. The flat lands surrounding the hills are given to rice and corn farming and results in a beautiful green backdrop for the Chocolate Hills.
The Chocolate Hills Complex is a government-owned and operated resort. The newly developed “Sagbayan Peak” is a 5-hectare mountaintop resort and recreation center which also has a viewing deck that offers a 360° view of the hills and the blue sea beyond. 002-TARSIER SANCTUARY- The Tarsier Sanctuary is a large forest dedicated to the protection of tarsiers, small nocturnal primates with big, round eyes that feed primarily on insects. They usually cling to low branches or the trunks of slim trees. A visit to the sanctuary is just like a trip inside the deep forest having thick vegetation with different flora and fauna. Visitors have to enter the semi-enclosed area composed of shrubs and mini-forest where they can spot and take photos of the tiny tarsiers. At just about 8-16 centimeters (3-6 inches) long, they are truly tiny and lovable. Even though they are that small they have been known to jump up to 16 feet.
We can learn about this 45 million-year-old species of small primates that can amazingly turn their heads to 180 degrees. It provides immense knowledge about this endangered species and also a great opportunity to see one of the rare species in the world.
Tarsiers are delicate, emotionally sensitive creatures that get stressed easily (and they have been known to commit suicide via banging their heads against tree trunks), so visitors have to lower their voices and keep the noise level to a minimum. Visitors are allowed to take pictures (without the flash), but touching the tarsiers is an absolute taboo.

006-BLOOD COMPACT MONUMENT (SANDUGO) - The Sandugo or Blood Compact Shrine monument is a landmark at the site of the first international treaty of friendship between Spaniards and Filipinos. Behind the monument is a magnificent view of Bohol Sea. The monument, with the bronze statues of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Rajah Sikatuna and several other witnesses, was a masterpiece of the Boholano sculptor and National Artist for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva.
The Sandugo was a blood compact, performed in the island of Bohol in the Philippines, between the Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna the chieftain of Bohol on March 16, 1565, to seal their friendship as part of the tribal tradition. This is considered as the first treaty of friendship between the Spaniards and Filipinos. "Sandugo" is a Visayan word which means "one blood".
This is proven when Datu Sikatuna, a native chief of the Island of Bohol, preferred the act of Blood Compact or Sandugo instead of signing an agreement with General Miguel Lopez de Legaspi upon the general’s expedition from Navidad, Mexico reaching Bohol, Cebu in 1565.The Sandugo or blood compact is an act of trust, confidence, and friendly relations. This is the traditional equivalent of what we know now as “diplomatic relations” and is done by drawing a small cut in the arm of two opposing entities with the blood placed in cups with wine.
Today, the Blood Compact Shrine serves as a memorabilia of the historical happening during the middle March of 1565 where a bound of friendship was established to create a fundamental unity.

007- HINAGDANAN CAVE AT PANGLOW ISLAND- The cave was accidentally discovered by a farmer; while clearing his land he found 2 holes, curious, he dropped a stone and heard a splash. He built a ladder “hagdan” and was able to access the cave and find its hidden beauty, thus the origin of the name Hinagdanan. The cave’s entrance, which leads to a cavern that is less than a hundred meters long, can only be entered one at a time. The slimy and smooth friction on the walkway is caused by the cave’s natural water droplets. Hinagdanan is a karst cave which means it is made of limestones. Boasting several stalactite and stalagmite formations parallel to each other and a fresh water lagoon that is about 10 to 12 meters deep. The cave accepts 50pax/30 minutes as carrying capacity. Path length from entrance to end 28 meters. The cave is about 100 meters long and beautiful rock formations. The cave is lit by sunlight which filters through holes in the ceiling. The underground lake is a popular swimming spot. The surface of the lagoon seems to be greenish because of green limestone on the bottom. The cave is a place of nesting swallows. The activity site is situated in Brgy. Tan-awan in the town of Oslob. Swimming with a whale shark is a unique wildlife interaction that will last forever. Very unusual that it’s just around 30m from the shore line and it is already this deep.
WHALE SHARK-
- Whales sharks are the largest fish in the world.
- They are not whales; they are sharks, though, they are massive like whales and they feed more like whales than a typical shark.
- Whale sharks can grow up to 40 feet (12 meters) long, but on average they grow to 18 to 32.8 feet (5.5 to 10 m) and weigh 20.6 tons (18.7 metric tons). That’s about the size of a school bus.
- A whale shark’s mouth is about 5 feet wide (1.5 m). They have rows of over 300 teeth, but as filter feeders they do not use these teeth to eat.
- Each whale shark has its own unique pattern of spots, much like human fingerprints.
- Their teeth are as soft as toothbrush bristles which is the main reason why they can’t eat you.
- They reach sexual maturity at around 30 years and their lifespan is an estimated 70 to 100 years.
- They can bear a baby whale shark once they reach 60 years old (human years) and can bear 1-2 babies.
- These sharks don’t attack and tear apart their prey like most many of their relatives. While they are meat-loving carnivores, whale sharks are filter feeders. They open their mouths, let water come in and their bodies filter out food, and release the water and any debris back into the ocean.
- Plankton are their main food source, but they also eat shrimp, algae and other marine plant material, sardines, anchovies, mackerels, squid, tuna and albacore.
- Whale shark females produce eggs, but the young hatch inside of the mother instead of in the water like most fish. Then, the female gives birth to about 300 live young 40cm to 60 cm long. Many never make it to maturity, though.
- Whale sharks tend to like warmer areas and are found in tropical waters all over the world.
- There are 215 whale sharks in Oslob.
- The whale shark is featured on the reverse of the Philippine 100-peso bill.
- All whale shark watchers must undergo orientation at the Briefing Center on the rules for interaction with whale sharks.
- No feeding of whale sharks by unauthorized personnel.
- Do not touch, ride, or chase a whale shark.
- Do not restrict normal movement or behavior of the shark.
- Do not use flash photography.
- Do not create splash when entering the water.
- Do not wear sunscreen if you are going to enter the water.
- Motor boats are prohibited in the area. Only paddle boats are allowed.
- Viewing is limited to 30 minutes.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 5m from the head, 6m from the tail (this differs from the 2m from the head, and 5m from the tail stated in the ordinance).
- All the Whale Sharks at the Oslob Whale Shark Snorkel tour are wild animals and come and go as they please. The floats you see on the surface are merely marking the area for motorized boats to stay away.
- Diving and snorkeling are limited in time and people, and done by batch. Each batch has 30 minutes to watch or swim with the whale sharks.
- All the boats used in the activity, at the feeding area, are paddled using wooden oars — leaving no harmful chemicals unlike boat propellers.
- There are marine biologists in the area monitoring the water activity. Images are taken each day in water and using astrological mapping – map the whale shark spots.
- The Whale Shark Watching tour provides many benefits including, but not limited to, providing a larger source of income and employment to a town that historically has a high unemployment rate and also a knock-on effect for the entire economy of Cebu. It encourages the local and foreign visitors alike to advocate in the preservation of the Whale Sharks and minimizes the fishing of these gentle giants in many countries.
